KABUL – The United States has strongly urged the Taliban to prevent Afghanistan from becoming a safe haven for terrorist activities, in the wake of Pakistan’s call for Afghanistan to take action against militants responsible for recent terrorist attacks in Pakistan. The Taliban have denied Pakistan allegations that they are harboring TTP.
During a press briefing on Monday, US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller addressed the issue of increasing militancy in Pakistan and Afghanistan’s responsibility in curbing it. Miller emphasized that the US has been clear in its stance that the Taliban must take measures to ensure Afghanistan is not used as a base for launching terrorist attacks.
In response to the recent attacks in Pakistan Zhob and Sui districts which killed dozens, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir expressed grave concerns about the safe havens and operational freedom enjoyed by terrorist groups, including the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), in Afghanistan. Their defence minister Khawaja Asif also criticized Afghanistan for failing to uphold its obligations under the Doha peace agreement. He accused Afghanistan of allowing its territory to be used for terrorist activities, despite Pakistan’s long-standing hospitality towards millions of Afghan refugees.
As tensions escalate and terrorist activities persist, Pakistan has vowed to take all necessary measures to protect its territory and citizens, seeking divine guidance in its efforts to maintain security.
