KABUL: The UK is planning to host a conference on Afghan humanitarian status, hoping to raise $4.4 billion to counter the humanitarian crisis in the country.
The conference would be held via zoom.
With the Islamic Emirate swept into power in August, international aid was suspended and the access of the Afghan government to country’s roughly $9.5 billion assets has been restricted.
The US President Joe Biden has recently signed an executive order to move the 3.5 billion dollars of the assets to as compensation to the victims of 9/11.
The decision faced widespread reactions inside and outside of Afghanistan. The UN estimate 98 percent of the population to be struggling with severe poverty.
“The scale of need is unparalleled, and consequences of inaction will be devastating,” UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said in a statement. “The UK is determined to lead the global effort. We will bring international allies together to raise vital aid to deliver food, shelter and health services, protect women and girls and support stability in the region.”
