By Akhtar M. Nikzad-KABUL: The Ministry of Interior (MoI) commended the Afghan National Civil Order Police (ANCOP) for its “exemplary” achievements against armed insurgents.
Minister of Interior, Noorulhaq Uloomi, in a joint press conference on Saturday said that last year ANCOP has significant role in fighting militancy and inflicted heavy casualties on insurgents.
He said that in provinces where rebels emerged and challenged writ of the government, the civil order police suppressed them to improve security situation.
The minister underlined that Afghan security forces feel no pity for insurgents as the militant groups do not hesitate in killing innocent people and attacking civil as well as military installations.
The insurgents are organized and supported by neighboring countries aimed at turning Afghanistan into shelter for terrorists. The enemies want to threaten the Central Asian countries, he added. However, he did not say who exactly support terrorism in the war-hit country.
“Afghan security forces are guarding the country to protect it from international terrorism and conspiracies of regional countries. We will not let them to succeed in their nefarious designs,” the minister reiterated.
He urged the regional countries for support against terrorism and extremism, saying that without cooperation of the neighboring and regional countries terrorism could not be eliminated. “Terrorism will continue to threaten the region unless we [region] join hands against this evil [terrorism]. The insurgents who fight against Afghan security forces do not respect and believe on human values and Islamic laws. The militants are trying hard to implement their master’s plans in Afghanistan,” he said.
He asked ANCOP to leave no stone unturned to protect civilians and eliminate militants.
General Commander of ANCOP, Zemarai Paikan, said that ANCOP is equipped with modern weapons and has the ability to stave off insurgent attacks.
He said the civil order police had been successful on aggressive and defensive fronts against the militants and inflicted significant casualties on the anti-state elements.
It is worth to mention that ANCOP is a highly sophisticated and special police unit of the Afghan National Police (ANP) and falls under the Ministry of Interior. It was established by the United States in 2006. ANCOP has eight brigades in the country with mission to provide crisis response in urban areas, prevent violent public incidents, and provide civil order presence patrols. In addition, it performs specialized high-risk missions in support of the Afghan Uniform Police (AUP) and other ANP units and elements.
