KABUL – The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, announced on Monday the commencement of consultations regarding the potential appointment of a U.N. envoy tasked with facilitating dialogue between Afghanistan’s Taliban-led government and the global community.
Addressing reporters at a press conference, Guterres disclosed that despite extending an invitation, Taliban representatives declined to participate in a meeting convened in Doha over the weekend, which aimed to assemble international envoys to discuss Afghanistan’s situation.
Expressing optimism, Guterres voiced his anticipation for the attendance of Taliban officials in forthcoming meetings of similar nature.
