KABUL: The United Nations says Steve Brooking, Special Advisor and Director of Peace at the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), met Sunday with Taliban official Mullah Abdul Haq Wasiq in Qatar, where he expressed his concerns over the UN personnel security in the ongoing conflicts between the militant group and the Afghan government forces.
The UN office in Herat province was targeted by rocket attacks this week, when Taliban fighters attacked the provincial capital and the nearby district of Gozara.
According to reports, one Afghan guard of the UN office was killed and two more injured in the attack for which Taliban are blamed.
The United Nations condemned the rocket attack as a war crime.
Taliban confirmed the meeting.
Mullah Wasiq reiterated their policy, saying that they provide full security for the UN and other organizations in the areas under their control, according to reports.
Taliban’s Political Spokesman Mohammad Naeem, said that Mullah Wasiq expressed regrets over the incident and emphasized that such incidents should not turn to political tools.
Brooking has said he would share all the maps and information about their offices with the Taliban for their security measures.
