KABUL: The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) says in a report that intensifying of violence has slowed the Afghan government’s efforts to fight corruption, adding that although Kabul has taken positive steps in making laws for counter corruption.
The UNAMA released its fifth annual report titling ‘Afghanistan’s counter corruption efforts’ on Wednesday.
“During the making of the report from January 2020 to May 2021, the government of Afghanistan continued support to reforms in fighting corruption. But the negative impacts of Covid-19, peace negotiations and increased violence after the foreign withdrawal, the reforms have been slowed,” the report said.
According to the report, the anti corruption justice center has increased evaluating the corruption-related dossiers.”
The UNAMA Chief, Deborah Lyons, said that effective struggle against corruption helps government’s legitimacy, welfare and stability.
The report called for persistent efforts to empower monitoring and evaluating mechanisms. It said that the United Nations is ready to support Afghanistan in implementing of reforms for counter corruption.
President Ashraf Ghani admitted on Tuesday that his government failed to convince international community by its efforts in fighting against corruption.
“I would like to say that unfortunately the international community was not happy with my colleagues’ efforts in removing of corruption.”
