Kabul: According to a statement from UNAMA, the UN Security Council (UNSC) emphasized the crucial need for the continuous presence of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) and other UN entities across the nation. Additionally, the Council requested the Secretary-General to provide a report every three months on the situation in Afghanistan and the execution of UNAMA’s mandate.
The UN Security Council commended the extension of UNAMA’s mandate until March 17, 2025, as it showcases the importance of upholding a field presence.
The Council’s President for March, representing Japan, emphasized the resolution’s provision of a robust and flexible mandate for UNAMA to tackle Afghanistan’s challenges. He emphasized the Mission’s indispensable presence as the international community aims to deepen engagement and foster confidence with the Taliban, sending a resolute message of ongoing UN engagement to the Afghan people.
The Russian envoy stressed the importance of cooperating with Taliban authorities for lasting peace in Afghanistan and condemned any politicization of humanitarian efforts.
The US representative highlighted the Afghan people’s right to peace, security, and stability, expressing that extending UNAMA’s mandate enables the UN to address international priorities, promote peace, and facilitate dialogue. The urgency of restoring human rights, particularly for women and girls, was underscored.
The Chinese representative expressed disappointment that the resolution did not reflect the latest developments in Afghanistan, noting the country’s stability over two years after the withdrawal of foreign troops.
