KABUL: The United Nation envoy in Afghanistan has called on all warring parties in Afghanistan to halt fighting during the holy month of Ramadan, and warmly wished the Afghan masses on the occasion.
In a statement, issued on Sunday on the occasion of Ramadan, Tadamichi Yamamoto, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Afghanistan hopes that “the observance of Ramadan will provide an opportunity for all communities in Afghanistan to come closer together”.
In addition, Yamamoto said that Ramadan is “a special time of prayer and reflection for Afghans, as well as a time to show compassion for those most affected by the conflict in the country”.
“The UN family in Afghanistan remains committed in its stand with the Afghan people in their quest for a peaceful, united and prosperous Afghanistan,” he said.
The halt in the fighting raised by UN at a time when the Taliban group rejected truce during Ramadan, rather said fighting in this month has more rewards.
They (Taliban) also rejected Consultative Loya Jirga’s resolution, where 3,200 delegations across the country, called on the Afghan government and Taliban group to embrace ceasefire, beginning from first day of Ramadan. Not only rejected, but the Taliban termed Jirga a symbolic and failure.
