KABUL: The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohammad Haneef Atmar met with the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and Head of UNAMA, Ms. Deborah Lyons, and discussed issues related to the Afghan peace process.
Mr. Atmar expressed his appreciation for the constructive role the UN and its related organizations, especially UNAMA, had been playing to enhance the peace process in Afghanistan, his office said in a statement on Tuesday.
Ms. Lyons briefed Mr. Atmar on the programs being implemented in Afghanistan by the various UN agencies, including WHO, UNICEF, UNHCR. She said that UNAMA was working on new guidelines in light of which the UN agencies should be operating in the country. Ambassador Lyons assured Mr. Atmar of the full UNAMA support for the resumption of talks and restoration of peace and stability in Afghanistan.
Minister Atmar discussed the latest developments regarding the peace talks and expressed his gratitude to Ambassador Lyons and the United Nations for their support to the Afghan peace process.
