KABUL – In a disturbing revelation, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan has documented more than 1,600 cases of human rights violations within prisons under Taliban administration.
The report, released Monday by UNAMA’s Human Rights section, sheds light on a distressing trend spanning 19 months. Spanning from January 2022 to July 2023, the report painstakingly records instances of human rights violations in government-run Taliban detention facilities across 29 provinces in Afghanistan. Shockingly, these violations encompass a range of abuses, with eleven percent of cases involving violence against women.
The alarming findings serve as a stark reminder of the complex challenges Afghanistan continues to face, even as the country grapples with its evolving political landscape. Despite these revelations, the Taliban has yet to respond to the UNAMA report, although they have previously disputed similar reports.
