AT-KABUL: A US drone strike has killed 17 Taliban fighters in eastern Afghanistan, before to launch their armed attacks against Afghan security troops, local officials said Tuesday.
Taliban fighters under the command of “Daud” were planning to launch armed attacks against passenger vehicles and security forces along the Kabul-Turkham highway in Muhmand Darah district of Nangarhar province, but were killed before to implement their plan.
“All destructive elements along with their two commanders, were killed in drone strike last night” an army spokesman, in eastern Nangarhar province, Numaan Atifi, told Afghanistan Times.
He blamed the group was involved in destructive and terrorist attacks in the region and was creating security challenges for the locals.
NATO troops, who changed their combat role to non-combat or Resolute Support continued to target suspected Taliban fighters in eastern Afghanistan since January. Local security officials believe such attacks weakened militants and made them unable to operate in large group level.
The attack come in a while that at least 11 other militants were targeted and killed on Sunday in another drone attack.
Drone strikes usually being carried out in remote and mountainous areas, where Afghan security forces were not more operational due to lack of proper air force.
