Kabul: The US Institute of Peace has warned of emerging threats from Afghanistan and Pakistan targeting the US and its allies. Their latest report, released on May 14, highlights concerns about counterterrorism efforts in the region potentially diverting attention from strategic competition with China and Russia. The report emphasizes the importance of preventing attacks on the US homeland and its allies to safeguard America’s credibility.
Despite efforts to combat terrorism, the report notes that some groups in Afghanistan, including the Taliban, have not severed ties with certain factions. It also raises alarm about the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) posing a significant threat to Pakistan and the region. Additionally, the report underscores the potential for terrorist threats from Afghanistan and Pakistan to destabilize India, a key US ally in the region.
The US Institute of Peace offers recommendations to US policymakers on revitalizing counterterrorism strategies in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Meanwhile, the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan asserts that its territory does not pose a threat to other countries.
