KABUL – Iran’s former foreign minister Mohammad Jawad Zarif disclosed that during the 2001 Bonn Conference, the United States advocated for the establishment of a “good Taliban government” in Afghanistan. Meanwhile, European participants pushed for the re-establishment of a monarchy in the war-torn country.
Zarif highlighted Iran’s significant influence at the conference, asserting that Tehran achieved its objectives and played a crucial role in forming the former Afghan government. Reflecting on Iran’s broader fight against terrorist groups, he criticized the acceptance of such groups in neighboring countries, calling it a violation of good neighborly principles.
The Bonn Conference, held in December 2001 in Germany, aimed to create a new Afghan government following the fall of the Islamic Emirate. After nine days of negotiations, a two-stage agreement was signed on December 13, laying the groundwork for what would become a republic. This government lasted for 20 years before collapsing in August 2021, allowing the Taliban to regain control.
