KABUL: The United States says its diplomatic activities would continue in Afghanistan after military withdrawal.
The US has now 2,500 soldiers in Afghanistan who are planned to leave the country by September.
“We have clearly said that we won’t leave Afghanistan alone even when our troops withdraw from the country. We intend to stay very active diplomatically by making efforts to reach a political settlement through peace talks between the government of Afghanistan and Taliban,” the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Tuesday.
He threatened that any attacks on the American troops during the withdrawal would be severely responded. “We are focusing on a calculated, safe and ordered exit of our troops. We have clearly announced that we will protect during the withdrawal and will hardly respond any attacks on them.”
The statement comes after Taliban threatened to attack the foreign soldiers as the US officials violated a deal signed between Donald Trump and the insurgents that orders American soldiers to withdraw by May 1.
Britain, the US’s closest ally in the Afghan invasion, is also emphasizing on the safe withdrawal of its troops.
“The security of our troops is our priority. In addition to that, we need to get sure that we are able to counter terrorism and we should not lose the achievements we have gained in the past 20 years,” said Dominic Raab, British Foreign Secretary.
