KABUL – In a letter to Congress released on Friday, President Joe Biden confirmed that US military personnel remain stationed outside Afghanistan to address potential threats that may emerge from within the country.
Biden’s statement, included in the War Powers Report issued by the White House, underscored the need for this continued military presence to protect US interests and national security. “United States military personnel remain postured outside Afghanistan to address threats to the United States homeland and United States interests that may arise from inside Afghanistan,” the president wrote.
The US officially withdrew from Afghanistan in August 2021, bringing an end to nearly two decades of military involvement following an agreement with the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. As part of this deal, the Islamic Emirate pledged not to allow Afghan soil to be used as a base for attacks on other nations.
Despite the withdrawal, the presence of US troops near Afghanistan serves as a precautionary measure, aimed at countering any threats to US security interests in the region.
