AT-KABUL: Amnesty International called on the government to ensure safety of aid workers and bring those responsible for killing of nine people, mostly humanitarian workers, in northern Balkh province to book.
Unknown gunmen shot dead nine Afghan employees of a Cezch charity organization in an attack on a guesthouse in the Zari district of northern Balkh province the other day.
Amnesty International said that killing of the aid workers was a reminder for the Afghan government to increase protection for aid workers. The watchdog organization urged the government to launch a probe into the incident and bring those responsible for the attack to justice. The organization said that being an aid worker is a risky business in Afghanistan.
“The latest attack must be urgently investigated and those responsible brought to justice. Anything less will send the message that aid workers are a fair target,” it added.
President Ashraf Ghani also condemned the attack and said that perpetrators of the heinous act were enemies of peace and development in Afghanistan. He instructed the Ministry of Interior (MoI) to arrest those responsible for the killing.
