Will Winner of the U.S. Presidential Election Impact Afghanistan’s Future?

By Rafiullah Anwari

Americans will go to the polls to vote for their preferred candidate On Tuesday, November 5.

The main contenders in this U.S. presidential election are former President Donald Trump from the Republican Party and current Vice President Kamala Harris from the Democratic Party, alongside three other candidates:

– Cornel West, a philosopher, professor, and independent candidate

– Jill Stein, a doctor and the Green Party nominee

– Chase Oliver, the Libertarian Party candidate and political activist

Among these five U.S. presidential candidates, Trump and Harris are widely known both in the United States and globally. It is therefore expected that one of these two will emerge as the winner and become the next president of the United States. As the countdown to the U.S. presidential election begins, Trump and Harris are actively campaigning.

Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate, enjoys support from President Joe Biden and former President Barack Obama, and has a substantial following. Donald Trump, who previously held the presidency, also retains a significant base of support in the United States, rivaling Harris’s.

Impact of the U.S. Election on Afghanistan

As the countdown for the U.S. election continues, it appears that the winner will either be Trump or Harris.

Trump, a staunch opponent of the U.S. military withdrawal from Afghanistan, has repeatedly criticized President Biden’s decision to pull U.S. forces out of the country, calling it one of the most shameful actions in U.S. history. Trump has argued that America should have withdrawn from Afghanistan with power and dignity, not with shame and disgrace. He believes that the U.S. should have maintained control of Bagram Air Base, which, according to him, was strategically valuable due to its proximity to China’s nuclear facilities.

While Trump intended to withdraw U.S. forces as well, he stated that he would have done so earlier and with more strength and dignity. He planned to keep Bagram Air Base operational, a decision that Biden eventually reversed, leading to the base’s relinquishment. Trump has frequently remarked that if he becomes president again, he will reclaim Bagram Air Base.

On the other hand, Biden, whose vice president Harris is now running for the presidency, holds a contrasting view. He maintains that withdrawing from Afghanistan was one of the best decisions of his administration.

If Trump wins this election, he might intervene in Afghanistan’s politics, potentially affecting the country’s future. Conversely, if Harris wins, she will likely uphold Biden’s stance and have a limited impact on Afghanistan’s internal affairs.

Now we wait to see who will win the U.S. election: Donald Trump or Kamala Harris?
