AT-KABUL: Wolesi Jirga (Lower House of the parliament) came hard on establishment of the selection committee—a proposed body to nominate members of the two electoral bodies. It said that activities of the committee were against the law.
Abdul Rauf Ebrahimi, Speaker of the Wolesi Jirga, said on Saturday that establishment of the committee before approval of the election law and the act of duties and responsibilities of the electoral bodies was illegal.
Members of the selection committee were recently appointed recently and they convinced their first meeting. The committee is expected to start its work officially this week.
President Ghani appointed seven members of the committee through a decree.
The committee is comprised of three civil society activists including two men and woman, a representative of the High Council of Supreme Court, a representative of Administrative Reforms Commission, a member of Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) and a member of the Independent Commission for Overseeing the Implementation of Constitution.
The selection committee would introduce 21 candidates for the membership of the Independent Election Commission (IEC) and 15 other candidates for membership of the Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (IECC) to the president.
