AT-KABUL: The Wolesi Jirga (Lower House of the parliament) is set to rise for a 45-day summer recess today (Thursday) but the lawmakers are yet to approve four major laws and give vote of confidence to key cabinet members.
The second deputy speaker, Nazir Ahmadzai, told reporters on Wednesday that the Wolesi Jirga will go for summer break today (Thursday).
It is said that the house debated more than 874 issues and took necessary steps for their resolution during past four months and a half. However, they are yet to give vote of confidence for three key cabinet members – including Defense Minister, member of the Supreme Court and Attorney General.
He prodded the government to be quick in introducing the remaining nominees.
He said the Wolesi Jirga has held 15 extraordinary sessions for observation purposes. “We have approved six draft laws and an agreement and rejected a presidential decree in 56 general sessions,” he said.
Meanwhile, Nazifa Zaki, an MP said it was unfair that most of MPs have left the country for Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah Hajj while their task is more important.
Lawmaker Hafiz Mansoor also raised the issue, and said one hour inside parliament house is more important than the Umrah Hajj. “The MPs should fulfill their promises they made to their clients. Their presence in the house more important than going for Umrah Hajj,” he added.
At least 60 MPs including the Wolesi Jirga speaker have reportedly traveled to Saudi Arabia for performing Umrah Hajj. The parliament house has held two sessions in past two weeks due to absence of majority of MPs. It is the fifth year of Wolesi Jirga’s 16th round.
During the period, the assembly gave votes of confidence to 18 ministers-designate, heads of two independent institutions and a member of the Supreme Court.
