KABUL: A group of women staged a peaceful protest in Kabul on Tuesday against the closure of girls’ schools, saying the world remained indifferent about women’s rights in Afghanistan.
Protesters gathered at gates of UNAMA in Kabul accused the international community, human rights groups, and United Nations of turning a blind eye to the restrictions imposed by the Taliban on Afghan women.
The protesting women said the silence of the United Nations is “shameful”.
They chanted slogans “right to education and right to work are fundamental rights of women” and “history will be ashamed of the silence of the UN”.
In the meantime, the Afghan women wanted to get a chance to meet with the head of UNAMA Deborah Lyons to talk to her about women’s rights and to submit her letter in this regard.
Another all-women demonstration was also held in Kabul where women demanded schools for girls be opened and their rights be preserved.
