World Human Rights Day observed

Stop kangaroo courts, say women rights’ supporters

By Akhtar M.Nikzad-KABUL: Ministry of Hajj and Islamic Affairs (MoHIA) and Afghan Women’s Network (AWN) observed the World Humans Right Day on Thursday here on Thursday.

Speaking at the ceremony, AWN said that violence against Afghan women have not declined in the last 14 years rather every day women are being punished by Taliban’s kangaroo courts in every nook and cranny of the country.

Chief of AWN, Hasina Safi, said that violence and extremism in the country have been a cause of frustration for women, and the government’s efforts to curb violence and threats were not satisfactory.

She stressed that protecting human rights and prevention of violence have been the responsibility of the government. “Ensuring women’s rights is part of Islamic teachings therefore whereas the government must focus on elimination of violence against women.

“As all we know, the government has been unconcerned over prevention of violation against women and as a result the government sometimes forgets to prosecute those involved in women’s rights violation,” she said.

Seran Danish, a member of civil society, said that current year has been a bloody year and women were going through unprecedented incidents of violence.

She called on all the human rights supporting bodies to provide action plan to the government to insure and support women’s rights appropriately.

Faiz Mohammd Osmani, Minister of MoHIA said that kangaroo courts by Taliban were not acceptable to the government and those who attempt to run kangaroo courts do not have information about Islam. “They want to tarnish Islam therefore we are against kangaroo courts,” Osmani said.

In the last two months, in insecure parts of the country Taliban insurgents awarded punishments to several women in connection with what they call them acts of adultery.

Afghan Women’s Network in a declaration asked the government to evaluate the women violation cases and to support women rights, expanding writ of the government and prevention of kangaroo courts by the Taliban, eliminate culture of impunity and to implement the Elimination of Violence Against Women (EVAW).

It merits mention that the Human Rights Day has been observed by the international community every year on December 10. For the first the day was by commemorated in 1948 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
