AT-KABUL: The provincial governor and mayor of southern Zabul province have survived an ambush by unidentified gunmen, a local official said Monday.
“A group of insurgent attack official’s convoy on Zabul-Kandahar highway earlier today as the officials was on their way to Shahr-e-Safa district.” Provincial governor spokesman Gul Islam Siyal said.
“Governor’s Besmellah Afghanmal and mayor Karimullah Hakimi escaped the attack unhurt,” he added.
However he did not provide more details about the incident.
No group including the Taliban insurgents has claimed responsibility behind the incident.
Large number of troops were killed and captured during the Taliban ambush in different parts of the country.
Afghan security forces, stretched on multiple fronts and facing record casualties, are struggling to rein in the fighters even as the government makes repeated efforts to jump-start peace negotiations. NATO’s combat mission has stayed on to train and support local security forces.
